The easy way to stay on budget
YNAB (You Need A Budget) may be the best-known budgeting app in the world, with a devoted method: give every dollar a job, in advance. It works brilliantly — for those who keep up the discipline.
piggyme works the other way around: you import your bank statements and the app tells you what is going on — categories, fixed costs, forecast, net worth. Insight first, discipline optional. And there is a more fundamental difference: where your data lives, and what it costs.
| Feature | piggyme | YNAB |
|---|---|---|
| Price | €3/month or €30/year — free plan available | ± €109/year (~€9/month) |
| Method | Automatic insight from your statements; budgets if you want them | Zero-based budgeting: allocate every euro up front |
| Belgian banks | KBC, Belfius, Argenta, ING & co out of the box (CSV/Excel import) | Bank sync strongest in US/Canada; in Europe often manual |
| Privacy | End-to-end encrypted; private mode is zero-knowledge; no bank login required | Data on US servers, readable by the service |
| Expense splitting | Built in: groups, balances, settle via EPC QR | Not included (separate app needed) |
| Languages | Dutch, French, English | English only |
| Free tier | Yes — fully local on your device, unlimited | No — 34-day trial, then paid |
To be fair: if you have been happily budgeting the YNAB way for years, do not switch over price alone. But if you live in Belgium and mostly want to know where your money goes — without an American middleman — piggyme will feel like home faster.
